Life is a journey filled with twists and turns, and at various stages, we often find ourselves wondering, "What’s next for me?" Whether you’re approaching a new chapter in life or feeling a sense of restlessness, this question is both natural and necessary. But to answer it meaningfully, you must first understand who you really are. That’s where a Gospel-Centered Life Design Process can guide you.
Step 1: Begin with the Gospel-Centered Life Design Process
At the heart of discovering your next step is a deep understanding of your identity as seen through the lens of the Gospel. The Gospel-Centered Life Design Process isn’t just about setting goals; it’s about aligning your life with the truths of who God says you are. It’s about recognizing that you are created with purpose, loved deeply, and called to live out your unique design.
This process begins with prayer and reflection, seeking God’s guidance as you explore your gifts, passions, and the calling He has placed on your life. It’s about more than just finding a new hobby or career; it’s about living out the life God has uniquely designed for you.
For me, this journey led to some incredible milestones later in life. I completed my first 1/2 Ironman when I was 58, became an ICF Professional Certified Coach at 62, and now, at 64, I’m planning to ride my bicycle across the country. These achievements weren’t just about reaching goals; they were about understanding and embracing the person God created me to be.
Step 2: Get Involved in Community
We aren’t meant to journey through life alone. Community is essential in helping us discover our next steps. When we engage with others—whether in a church group, a small Bible study, or a volunteer organization—we gain new perspectives and encouragement that can illuminate our path.
Being part of a community allows you to serve others with your talents, receive feedback, and see yourself through the eyes of those who care about you. They can often see the potential and gifts in you that you might overlook.
If you’re not already involved in a community, consider joining a local group or starting one yourself. Look for opportunities to connect with others who share your values and interests.
Step 3: Live from Your Values
Understanding your values is key to designing a life that feels authentic and fulfilling. Your values are the guiding principles that shape your decisions and actions. When you live in alignment with your values, you experience a sense of peace and purpose.
But how do you identify your core values? Start by reflecting on the moments in your life when you felt most fulfilled. What were you doing? What was important to you in those moments? Those are clues to your core values.
Create a list of your top five values. Write them down and keep them in a place where you’ll see them often. As you consider your next steps, ask yourself if your choices align with these values.
Step 4: Utilize Your Talents
Your talents are a gift from God, and they play a significant role in your life’s design. When you use your talents in a way that serves others and honors God, you’ll find joy and fulfillment. Your talents may be in teaching, leadership, creativity, or even in the way you connect with others.
Identifying your talents often requires honest reflection and sometimes the insight of others. Don’t be afraid to ask trusted friends or mentors what they see as your strengths. Sometimes, our greatest gifts are the ones we take for granted because they come so naturally to us.
Becoming an ICF Professional Certified Coach at 62 was a way for me to harness my talents in guiding others. It wasn’t just about gaining a certification; it was about recognizing that God had given me a passion for helping others find clarity and direction in their lives.
